Why Buy A Sony Cybershot DSCW200 Digital Camera?

Is it possible for arguably the biggest electronic gadget manufacturer on the planet to produce a respectable digital camera for under $250? I'm talking about Sony here, and the camera in question is the Sony Cybershot DSCW200 Digital camera. The DSCW200 is an ultra compact digital, but is priced on the high side of that ultra compact category. Is it a worthy contender, or just a poser?

Let's start off with the most important consideration of any camera... image quality. Not so respectable with the DSC-W200. Sony opted to go with 12 mega pixels in this ultra compact. Somewhat akin, to trying to squeeze an elephant into the passenger seat of your Mini Austin. Damn hard to do, and even if your successful, where are you going to drive with an elephant? Marketing hype aside, 12MP is complete overkill for an ultra compact camera. The majority of pictures from an ultra compact camera are going to be viewed on the LCD, or uploaded to MySpace and FaceBook pages. Nobody is looking to blow these up, frame them, and then hang them over the fireplace. 5 or 6 Megapixels would have been fine. Probably better, as image noise would have been reduced.

For this price, I had bigger expectations from the DSC-W200 LCD. Unfortunately, it looks like Sony cheaped out here. 115,000 pixels for a 2.5 inch LCD is not great. It actually pretty grainy, and quite hard to view off angle, or in bright sunlight. As a basis for comparison, the top Canon cameras in this category sport 3 inch LCD screens with 230,000 pixel resolution. At least Sony did provide an optical viewfinder. Not a great one, but a viewfinder none the less.

While this next quibble is minor I agree, I simply have to bring it up. The USB cable provided by Sony for the DSC-W200 is proprietary. I really hate being forced into buying a product that is produced by only one company. I like choice. Sony has a nasty habit of pushing proprietary technology going back to Beta Video, the Memory Stick, and now with the whole Blu-Ray fiasco. Not to say those weren't good/better technologies, I just like choice.

But wait, that's not all. Sony made enough slip ups with the CyberShot DSC-W200, to make even the most ardent Sony lover cast a flirtatious eye towards other suitors. Here's a few more reasons:

- the zoom lens doesn't have enough zoom

- excessive megapixels has driven price too high

- time for flash to recharge is unacceptable

- big handed users will find camera controls difficult

- face detection is only available in auto mode

- face detection works inconsistently

- zoom feature won't work when shooting videos

Last week we went on a hike up one of the local trails in Lake Tahoe. I left the SLR at home and brought my compact digital camera along. Half way up the mountain we encountered a bear. I got the camera out and captured a couple of photos before he ran off into the woods.

1) Casio Exilim EP-Z750 Digital camera Review

The 7.2MP EP-Z750 is the smallest, lightest and thinnest camera in the group. It doesn't look big enough to have 7.2 mega pixels but it does! The back of the camera is almost all LCD screen, 2.5" worth, it's extra large, ideal for composing and viewing your shots. It has a 3x zoom with anti-shake and 30 scene modes compared to the usual 8 or 12 on most digicams, plus you can make up your own too. Being this small you would figure that there couldn't possibly be any manual controls, but you'd be wrong. The EP-Z750 has aperture, shutter priority and full manual settings which are all quick and easy to navigate. You get the hang of it real quickly. The quality of the photos you take with the Casio Exilim are surprisingly excellent with dynamic colors. The Casio Exilim Ep-Z750 view finder is quite small, thank you for the big LCD screen. It's got a quality 640x480 movie mode at 30 frames per second. Weight 4.5 oz.

2) Nikon Coolpix 7900 Digital Camera Review

The 7.1MP Coolpix 7900 is small, light and easy to use and like the Casio camera reviewed above, can be considered an ultra compact. It's large, bright 2" LCD display is perfectly visible outdoors in the sun. Unlike the Casio, it has a bulge where the battery goes forming a grip which makes it easy to hold. But that adds to its overall thickness. The Nikon Coolpix 7900 has a 3x optical zoom, a large battery capacity for taking hundreds of pictures, and a good flash. 640x480 movies at a full 30fps and Nikon's new Face Priority autofocus will automatically detect a face in the portrait and focus on it. The Coolpix has D-Lighting that lightens the dark areas. Somehow they also found room to squeeze in vibration reduction. The Nikon 7900 uses scene modes and there's one for almost every occasion, they're easy to use and work very well. The 7900 doesn't have manual control. The Nikon Coolpix 7900 is a small easy to use point and shoot camera with high-resolution. Weight 5.3oz

3) Canon PowerShot SD550 Digital Camera Review

The 7.1MP SD550 is an attractive, lightweight, thin, ultra-compact unit with an extra large 2.5" LCD screen and optical viewfinder. It uses 13 shooting modes including auto and manual. The PowerShot has a 3x zoom, equivalent to 37-111mm. This camera is fast! Shooting 2 photos per second till you use up all your memory. The speed of the auto focus is also significantly improved over earlier ELPH's. Canon has put the new DIGIC II Processor in and its images are excellent. The movie mode is 640x480 at a nice 30 frames per second. Of course it's PictBridge compatible and has a good flash. This is a solid performer with point and shoot ease. The Canon SD500, the SC550's sibling is the same camera for $50 less with a 2" LCD screen. Weight 6.08oz.

4) Olympus C-7000 Zoom Digital Camera Review

The 7.1MP, C-7000 is a very good looking compact digital camera with solid performance. Zoom is in the name, because this beauty has a 5x optical zoom, and a 6x digital zoom with the 35mm camera equivalency of a 39mm-190mm lens. This makes getting candid people shots easier, you don't need to get as close to your subject, just use your zoom to get in. The Olympus C-7000 Zoom has a large 2" LCD that is excellent even outside. You're not going to make a feature length movie with it however, because it takes 20 second clips at 30fps. The pop-up flash works good and easy to read menus make the C-7000 fairly easy to navigate. It has the new Olympus TruePic Turbo Image Processor for fast cycle times and excellent details. The C-7000 Zoom has 11 shooting modes plus manual operation. It's PictBridge Compatible for easy printing without a computer. This little Oly is tough to beat with it's powerful zoom, small size and high resolution. Weight 7.07oz

5) Sony CyberShot DSC-W7 Digital Camera Review

The 7.2 MP DSC-W7 is bigger than the ultra compact Casio Exilim its considered a compact digital camera. In traditional Sony style, this small camera is well thought out and easy to use everyday. Its got a viewfinder and a really big 2.5" LCD display that's nice for viewing and composing your shots. The 3x optical zoom lens is a Carl Zeiss equivalent to a 28-114mm lens. No expensive batteries to buy ever, it comes with 2 AA rechargeable batteries. The Sony CyberShot has an extremely quick start up time and fast recycle time. The DSC-W7 uses the memory stick format and has a an internal memory of 32MB. A manual mode with aperture and shutter speed controls with a photo exposure preview. Your also hooked up with an excellent movie mode with good sound just what you'd expect from Sony. The Sony CyberShot DSC-W7 is a very nice camera that takes good hi-resolution pictures and is easy to use. Weight 6.90 0z.

Contour has come out with a new action camera called the ContourROAM.

Some might say that this new camera is a step backwards in features and technology for Contour. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that came with the previous releases being the Contour+ and ContourGPS.

It seems this action camera is designed for the average Joe who just wants a handy camera that he can easily shoot HD footage with anywhere and anytime without having to fork out a lot of money for it.

The Contour ROAM does a very good job at being affordable while delivering quality. But with the low price, there have been some features that seem to be left out that may stop this from being the best affordable HD action camera on the market.

The Specs

The Contour ROAM delivers full HD 1080p resolution video. You can choose lower settings as well such as 960p and 720p. All videos are shot at either 25 or 30 frames per second. There is no option for 60fps which other competing cameras support. This is not a big issue unless you want to create videos and watch your videos back in super slow motion.

The lens captures 170 degrees which is standard across the board for more high-end action cameras. This one actually has a rotating nose which lets you spin the lens to get your frame exactly square. Very hand if you are mounting the camera on its side or upside down.

The Design

As with all Contour cameras, it is a sleek and small design. The new ContourROAM seems to have more rounded corners and all over it's a more refined design.

Switching the camera on and off is quick and easy with Contour's signature sliding switch which is positioned at the top of the camera. There is no waiting around for the camera to turn on and record. It goes from off to record in a quick two seconds.

The battery is an internal Lithium-Ion unit capable of recording for a maximum o 3.5 hours. This is quite remarkable because most other cameras' batteries only last 2 to 3 hours.

However, the internet battery is causing a bit of flack in the action camera community because there is no option to replace the battery when it goes flat. If you're in the middle of nowhere when your battery dies, you're out of luck if you want to charge it or replace it with a fresh battery.

Overall, the new Contour ROAM is a great camera for the price. It's significantly less than its competitors and produces equally sufficient high quality HD video quality.

Are Pentax SLR Cameras Any Good?

I was never really a professional with photography, but I was getting tired of the same old point-and-shoot camera. One day, I finally decided it was time to buy a Pentax SLR. Before I jumped in though, I did a lot of research. I eventually reached the decision to buy the Pentax K200D. I've never been one to buy an item because of its brand, because the name of an item does not necessarily determine its quality and performance. Now, I picked the Pentax K200D for many reasons which I will explain in detail below.

First of all, the camera offered weather sealing. On the box, it claims that it is the only camera in the industry (DSLR cameras) that is weather sealed. Though I probably won't need this, it is always good to have it to be on the safe side. Definitely a good feature for those outdoor photographers though.

Secondly, the camera allows users to take high quality JPEG and RAW photos at the same time. Most other cameras do not offer this, and alternatively only offer medium quality JPEG photos.

On another note, the camera is like the tank of cameras. I read many reviews from buyers of Sony and Nikon cameras, and many claimed that the cameras consisted of cheap lenses and were not very sturdy. I experienced this first hand after trying out some myself. Furthermore, the Pentax is complete opposite of those.

Something that is a positive to some users, yet a negative to some, is the fact that ir runs on AA batteries. The reason why I find this to be a positive is because there are many good AA quality batteries available nowadays. With this camera and those batteries, I know my camera will be lasting for a long time. Even if I do run out of batteries, I can virtually go to any store and purchase batteries.

The camera features in-body stabilization. This is great for beginners, and this was proven to me directly. This feature helped save many of my photos! Lastly, the camera is an APS-C sensor, a feature that attracted many buyers.

So how do I like the camera? So far it's great! I've been testing things out, particularly with different lenses. The autofocus on the camera is very quick as well. The light metering is also very consistent for me so far. The only thing I found I did not like so far is its burst rate, which is a bit low (4 JPEG or RAWs). I guess it is not too important because I do not do sports shots. If you are looking for a camera to take sport shots, this may not be it for you. Otherwise, it is one of the best cameras I have owned, and will continue to use it and learn more! Sony Cybershot DSC W210 Review

The Sony Cybershot DSC W210 packs plenty of power with its 12 megapixel sensor. This camera is small enough to fit into most pockets. It is available in silver, dark grey, pink and green. The Cybershot DSC W210 has a 4x optical zoom lens.

For most purposes you are likely to find the 12 megapixels overkill. Even if you are looking to make large prints you should find 6 to 8 megapixels plenty unless you are looking to go up to poster size and beyond. If you were planning to do that then the likelihood is you would be looking to invest in a more expensive and better quality camera anyhow.

To me the big advantage of having so many megapixels is that Sony has included a feature called smart zoom. This allows you to increase the amount of zoom available as long as you are prepared to sacrifice some of the megapixels you shoot at. In the past I have even found that shooting at lower megapixels can increase the quality of the images you shoot. Other advantages include taking up less space on a memory card and faster times to upload your photos to a computer. If you activate smart zoom you can increase zoom up to 25x. This may be overkill as at that setting you can only capture pictures for playback on a computer or television screen, but there are plenty of steps in the middle where you can find the right balance between print size and zoom.

The Cybershot DSC W210 fits into a group of pocket cameras that are less expensive than the top of the range models. The main reasons behind the savings tend to be the design of the cameras and the build quality. If you do not mind a fairly plain looking digital camera then you can save yourself plenty of money.

In terms of features there is not that much to choose between this camera and some of the more expensive ones. The 2.7 inch LCD screen compares well enough and the only obvious feature I can think of that is missing here is mechanical image stabilisation. This is where image stabilisation is handled either by gyroscopes in the lens or by making tiny shifts to the position of the sensor.

Aside from this Sony has incorporated some of the latest buzz features. These include face detection for sharper portraits and a smile shutter that automatically fires off a shot when the Cybershot DSC W210 detects someone is smiling. I have never noticed face detection making that much difference to a portrait shot and only you can decide how much value a smile shutter adds to the camera for you. Something you do not often see on a camera this size is the ability to add conversion lenses. This can improve the telephoto or wide angle capabilities of the camera. In order to do this you also need to buy a lens adapter.

The camera is able to produce High Definition still images, but it can only output standard definition movies.

On the whole I found the camera easy to use. Sony lays out its menus in a sensible way. They are icon rather than text based, but text does show up as you scroll through the icons.

When it comes to picture quality the Cybershot DSC W210 does a solid job. I cannot claim the pictures it produces are anything out of the ordinary, but on the whole the camera does a decent all round job if you are looking for a general snapshot camera with a reasonable price tag.

Similar cameras you may wish to take a look at include the Panasonic Lumix FS6, Panasonic Lumix FS7, Panasonic Lumix FS15 and the Olympus FE-5000.

Flip Video Ultra HD - Review

The Flip Video Ultra HD is a very impressive little gem and much refined compared to the other Flip Video cameras. Flips are probably so well known because they are ideal for anyone hoping to get that important shot in time at a spur of a moment's notice. The camcorder is all about having power with accessibility and mobility. First, this gadget is totally dumb proof. From the time you open the box and see there is no assembly required and pretty much your first speculation of which buttons do what will be on the money. The design is excellent period.

Compared to the alternative video cameras, this one is just barely larger. Though, this is a good thing because it seems to fit better in your hand. The HD quality of Flip Video Ultra HD looks great on the screen. Also another thing I like about it is it is fast. Fast as in, it will power on and off fast and when you mash a button it reacts quickly unlike your home computer or mobile phone if you know what I mean.

The new image stabilization works wonders compared to the older Flips. It definitely has smoother video and gets rid of some of the vibrations. For example, like say you were recording something on the side of the road while you are moving past it in your vehicle. The screen is a good size and the 720p playback on a big flat panel TV is just lets say....dang good stuff! Frames really do seem to move twice as fast now with it being upgraded from 30 fps to 60 fps, so the Flip Video Ultra HD is definitely smoother viewing in that area.

The USB connector is in a different place now (on the side instead of the top). I think they may have done this just because it makes more sense and is easier when plugging it into a laptop. This is also convenient because you don't have to have an extra cable or keep up with a cable and you know what a pain that can be especially if you own a digital camera that will ONLY use that specific USB cable. I hate that!!! But, that's a whole new topic. Anyway, the audio on the Flip Video Cameras continue to be good and remains the same on this one. The battery life ( 2 hours) is plenty for me so I am satisfied in that area also.

Lastly, the Flip Video Ultra HD software (Flipshare) continues to be user friendly. It is super easy to use. When you plug in the camcorder it will, or should, automatically start up. The software then makes it completely evident how to use the features which are: downloading the videos you recorded, how to play them back, how to stop frames and make them into photos, and share them. Also, it all seems to be faster now (video upload time/processing time seems to be quicker) compared to the older Flip Video Cameras. It seems to be similar to the iPod/iPhone control panel.

In closing, I would suggest this product just for the simple fact that is packs a lot of power (HD) for it to be so small/compact, easy to use, easy to carry around, and just plain out simple. The Flip Video Ultra HD is definitely the best yet in the Flip Video Cameras manufacturing line and was worth my investment and probably would be yours.
